The Cenozoic Era 66 million years ago- present
This era is so significant because it is the era we are in today! This era is when many things happened. Humans evolve from apes, as in the picture above and modern day animals form like cows and sheep! It is were WE all started!
Around 35 million years ago, the Himalayan Mountains formed. Since the land was still moving from Pangea, what is now India collided with what is now Asia forming very large fold mountains.

5 million years after the Himalayas formed, the continents are done moving to there positions that they are in now. Though they never stop moving, they reached the general area they are in today.
Only 10,000 years ago the Earth went through an ice age. The atmosphere and the whole Earth went through a time when the world got colder allowing ice to expand. The ice took of over the arctic.
55 million years ago, the Rocky Mountains formed. They formed when plates were subducting under the North American plate. These mountains run through the western part of Canada and North America.
66 million years ago, the first grasses grew. These were very important because when the later cows, sheep, and other modern animals appeared, they had grass to eat. It was a chain reaction.
After the grass grew, modern day mammals and other animals evolved about 65 million years ago. These animals were very similar to today's cattle that you may find on a farm. Many of these animals are around today! Sheep, cows, horses are just a few. They were able to survive because they had good nutrition because of the grass.
This strange creature was formed about 3.4 million years ago. We do not know much about this human resembling animal but we do know that us humans have evolved from them. They are very complex animals that have many cells.
Now comes the part about us. We came around about 100,000 years ago. That's nothing compared to everythong else I have been talking about. As you might know, us humans are the most complex creatures on this planet. We have many organs that work together as one.
Mass Extinction
Since we are still in the Cenozoic era, there has been no mass extinction yet. This era is lasting from 55 million years ago to today!
